The State of (Your) Open Enrollment

With open enrollment behind you, now is the best time to examine the state of your open enrollment to determine what worked and what didn’t. Here’s a list of things to consider before making plans for open enrollment this year.

  • Take a closer look at last year’s open enrollment goals. What was your objective and how did you measure success? Were you trying to increase participation in a high deductible health plan or encourage your employees to contribute more to their 401(k)?
  • Review your benefits communications. Was your messaging easy to understand? Did it engage employees? Were your graphics eye-catching? And did you make use of multiple communications vehicles to get the message out?
  • Send out a simple survey. Ask employees what they liked and what they didn’t like, and include a field for comments. You can gain valuable insight from employee feedback.

Once you know the state of your open enrollment, you can move forward with creating a benefits communication plan that gets your message out to employees. And remember, when crafting your message, talk to your employees with language they can understand. Avoid benefit speak by using every day lingo.
